On Sunday, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Shubhendu Adhikari, staged a sit-in outside the Raj Bhavan to protest against post-election violence. Adhikari, joined by Tapas Roy, Rudranil Ghosh, and 300 BJP workers, accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of undermining democracy, claiming that 50 lakh Hindus were prevented from voting in the Lok Sabha elections and more than two lakh in recent assembly by-elections. To address these issues, Adhikari announced the launch of a portal where those denied voting rights can register confidentially, pledging a legal battle for their rights.
Adhikari had earlier accused TMC workers of post-election violence in the High Court, seeking permission to protest outside the Raj Bhavan, which was granted by Justice Amrita Sinha. The court allowed the protest to be held peacefully for four hours on July 14, with a limit of 300 participants. The protest was also required to be free of weapons and inflammatory speeches, ensuring it remained non-violent.
